Thinking of Quitting? (Continued) |
• Is the
situation/malady I’m suffering with now something I knew
(predicted) would arise, even before arriving at law school? You probably knew very well that law school would be tough before you ever arrived. In spite of that knowledge you decided to attend. Why? • Finally you need to ask yourself the most important question of all. The question that asks if you’re letting yourself down. The question that goes to your character and values as a person. The question is this: Have I given law school everything I have? Make no mistake, if you quit you will be required to pay back the loans you’ve accumulated thus far. Further, telling employers "I have one year of law school" doesn’t as much say “we’re getting someone with some legal knowledge” as it says “we’re getting someone who quit” or “we’re getting someone who didn’t know the law well enough”. If you’re going to quit though, do it NOW, during or immediately after your first year. The longer you hang around, the more you have invested in both time and money. If you’re in your second or third year and want to quit, my opinion is that you have too much invested. During my time in law school I saw individuals and families pull off the seemingly impossible. People who can barely speak English have learned the arcane language of law, difficult for a native speaker, and gone on to graduate. People have defied incredible odds, held families together and completed law school. Don’t start thinking that your problems are so different. Do not hesitate to see a mental health professional. The university you are attending almost surely has free psychological services for students. If you are thinking of quitting, or if you are having any significant personal problems, I emphatically suggest you get yourself into the counseling center at your university. Believe me, you won’t be the first law student to seek out these services, not by a long shot! You’ll learn the truth of that statement when you have to wait a week or two for an appointment! |
